Teacher Cadet Training

Teacher Cadet is an innovative, curriculum-based college level course designed to attract talented young people to the education profession through a challenging introduction to teaching. The Teacher Cadet Program seeks to provide high school students insight into the nature of teaching, the problems of schooling, and the critical issues affecting the quality of education in America’s schools.

The Teacher Cadet Program’s homegrown recruitment model has become the national model for pre-collegiate teacher recruitment programs across the United States. Thirty-nine additional states have implemented the program, to date, and have infused South Carolina’s curriculum, Experiencing Education, into the framework of their future teacher programs. No other national model exists. At the heart of the Teacher Cadet Program are tenets of teacher quality and retention. A major challenge in public education continues to be retaining highly qualified and effective teachers. Growing attrition rates, particularly among beginning teachers, is one of the main contributing factors to the national shortage of successful educators. The Teacher Cadet Program was created to stem such shortages.

The Teacher Cadet curriculum, Experiencing Education, Eleventh Edition, designed exclusively for the Teacher Cadet Program, has forty rigorous standards based upon the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP) standards and are correlated with those of the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE), Association of Teacher Educators (ATE), National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS), and Interstate Teacher Assessment and Support Consortium (InTASC).

All new instructors must be trained in the use of the curriculum and are required to attend a three-day curriculum training session. All trainings hosted by CERRA take place in Rock Hill, South Carolina, on the campus of Winthrop University, which is where the program is headquartered. If your intent is to launch the program on a district or state level (with 8 or more schools/instructors), consider hosting a training in your area.

Interested in becoming a South Carolina Teacher Cadet instructor? Here are the criteria.
  • Be a current state-certified teacher.
  • Have at least three years of teaching experience.
  • Have a Master's degree. Because TC is a dual credit accrual course, College Partners require this to comply with CAEP and other accreditation standards regarding qualifications for higher education adjunct instructors.
  • Have the permission of one's principal or school-level administrator to implement and teach the course.
  • Attend a two-day training in implementing the course's curriculum, Experiencing Education, 12th Edition.
